Last year I had the opportunity to take the inaugural VAClassroom Social Media Specialist course, and it has changed the course of my business. Back then I thought Facebook was for kids and Twitter was the most ridiculous thing I’d ever heard of. Nevertheless, as a VA it’s important to understand current business trends and needs, so I signed up and fought my way through the new concepts and strange vocabulary and grimly learned to use them.

A few months ago, I was chatting with a colleague and listened to her voice my prior opinion, that social media was a waste of valuable time. I realized how much I had learned when I was able to quickly and clearly explain to her the potential benefits and propose a strategy for her. She said, “You make this so understandable. You really need to teach a class on it.” So I did... and I loved it.

Now I’m teaching Introduction to Social Media Concepts and some hands-on walk-through classes for my local business community. I’ve partnered with other local businesses and networks, I have several other classes in development, and I am loving every minute of this new passion and opportunity. If it hadn’t been for VAClassroom, I might never have found this new business direction that has me busier, happier and more fulfilled than ever!”

1. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

• Focus on what is important, help others and always remember it is YOUR business.

2. What motivates you to pursue a career as a Virtual Assistant?

• My son, my lifestyle and my wish to have my own business are what motivate me to be a Virtual Assistant. I am a military spouse and more or less a single parent. Additionally, we are moving quite a bit (7 times in 11 years). With this lifestyle you have to be creative in order to have a career. Being a Virtual Assistant is absolutely perfect for me and my family. I can be there for my son when he needs me, and I can have a career even though we move a lot. What else is there to say?

3. How has VAClassroom impacted your life?

• I am so glad I finally decided to sign up for the VAClassroom courses. VAClassroom has perfected the tools that I need to run a successful VA business. Within 2 weeks after finishing my Social Media Marketing Certification I had a new client. The certification makes a big impact and gave me the credibility I needed. Be yourself, honest, and up front with each of your clients. Not only do they appreciate your candor, but they are more trusting of both your advice and services. I’ve also received more referrals based on this simple advice.

What motivates you to pursue a career as a VA?

I would say the following reasons are why I continue to pursue a career as a VA: You can literally work anywhere and still service your clients. The ability to provide a much needed service. Helping my clients see the light at the end of the tunnel, which at times looks very overwhelming.
